Gurum Ward

Gurum Ward (sometimes listed as Gurum or Gurum A/B) lies just north of Bassa town. It includes the Gurum villages of Lamba (Fam Lamba 3 & 4), Hausa (Gur Ham Hausa 2), Jantudu, Menta, Mista’ali (popularly “Mista Ali”) and Taryo. These communities speak the Ce (Gurum) language. Gurum is named after the Gurum people, one of the small tribes of Bassa LGA. Politically it is part of Pengana Constituency. Gurum Ward has an elected councilor and sends representatives to local LGA meetings. Like its neighbors, Gurum is mainly farmland, and residents have pressed for better agricultural extension services. (In Plateau’s 2006 census Gurum had only a few thousand people.) There is no separate Gurum chieftaincy – all these villages answer to the Pengana traditional council.
